This Victorian era letter clip takes the form of an elegant lady’s hand emerging from an elaborate cuff which rests over a deeply textured and shaped backplate.
This distinctive design is elsewhere attributed to J. & E. Ratcliff of Birmingham, England, a Victorian metalworking firm known for decorative hand-form letter clips. Documented Ratcliff examples from circa 1870 share the pressed-metal construction, ornamental cuff, ring, textured backplate and scale seen here.
- Victorian, approximately c. 1870
- English
- Original spring mechanism remains functional
- Magnetic/ferrous components
- Approximately 5.4" long
- No readily visible maker’s mark
Condition:
Antique condition. This piece has clearly been used and displays substantial age-related patina, oxidation, finish loss, darkening and areas of corrosion. The hand is lighter in appearance while the backplate has developed a much deeper, darker surface. Despite its long working life, the decorative details remain wonderfully visible and the clip continues to function.
