Rare Mid-19th Century Book Form Locking Box circa 1850–1875.
Constructed of hardwood in the form of a large folio volume, with hand-painted faux page edges, fitted compartmented interior, original working lock and key, and decorative stringing to the underside. Intended for the discreet storage of valuables, correspondence, or important papers.
Details: 3 1/2" H x 12" W x depth: 8 1/4" L
Condition: Wear commensurate with age and use. There is a narrow split forming along the center of the lid. Some wear along the extreme edges. The lid is not attached to the upper hinge; however, the hinge is able to rest in place to maintain the functionality of the lid. The box is with a key. The lock functions.
