French Belle Époque Oudry Éditeur Wildlife Trinket Box c. 1880–1900

A richly sculpted French Belle Époque trinket box, marked “Oudry Éditeur,” and decorated with exceptionally bold high-relief wildlife scenes inspired by the engravings of the renowned 18th-century French animal painter, Jean-Baptiste Oudry.

This oval casket is remarkable for the intensity and depth of its relief. Every side features a different woodland narrative, including rams or bighorn sheep, pheasants and game birds, hunting dogs, and forest animals, all rendered with dramatic movement and layered detail. The sculptural work is deep, crowded, and expressive.

Cast in silvered spelter and finished with a time-earned patina, this piece dates to the late 19th century, when French éditeur works translated famous engravings into decorative metal objects for desks, vanities, and cabinets of curiosities. The hinged lid opens to reveal its original purple velvet-lined interior, worn and discolored from age but fully intact, adding to the authenticity and charm of the piece.
