This antique letter clip was made by Merry, Phipson & Parker of Birmingham, England, and features the firm's registered design incorporating the British Royal Arms, decorative shell ornament and a recessed rectangular cartouche.
The design was registered October 3, 1843, No. 24, placing its origins firmly in the early Victorian period. The registration date refers to the design itself rather than providing an exact manufacture date for this individual example, which we conservatively describe as 19th century.
Originally intended for organizing letters, bills and papers, the clip remains functional today and would make an extraordinary desk accessory or display piece for antique correspondence, photographs or ephemera.
- Brass with steel spring/mechanism
- Magnetic due to ferrous components
- Functional clip
- Approximately 5" long
Condition
Good antique condition with substantial and wonderfully appropriate age-related patina, oxidation, darkening and surface wear. Portions of the impressed lettering and finer decoration have softened through age and use, while the Royal Arms and principal decorative elements remain readily visible.
The mechanism remains functional. The surface has not been aggressively polished, preserving the dark aged finish that has developed over its long life. Please review photographs carefully as part of the condition description.
Please note, vintage goods are final purchase and cannot be returned. We will try to identify any notable flaws but pieces may be aged, have small chips or cracks, or peeling paint due to the nature of their age and use. By purchasing these one-of-a-kind treasures, you are agreeing to our final sale policy.
